Date & Time of Session: Mon. Jan. 9, 2023 1:45-3:15pm (mountain)
Gus Speth, past dean of Yale school of Forestry/Environmental Studies famously said "I used to think the top global environmental problems were biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse and climate change. I thought with 30 years of good science we could address these problems. But I was wrong. The top environmental problems are selfishness, greed and apathy, and to deal with these we need a spiritual and cultural transformation."
This session, which involves text study and your imagination, will explore the ecological implications of Jewish/biblical ideas of creation, land and Shabbat (and holidays, if time permits) and will consider how the biblical land ethic at the heart of Torah could help transform how we think and behave towards the earth.
R’Ellen Bernstein, eco-theologian and author, founded Shomrei Adamah, first national Jewish environmental organization (1988). Ellen writes and teaches on the ecology of the Bible, is on advisory boards for Third Act, and Yale Forum on Religion and Ecology. Her newest book Towards a Holy Ecology will be released in 2024.
